Maybe I am getting more sentimental but I have been looking at the holidays a bit differently this year. I look forward to family, food and gifts. But this year I want to give as much or more than I receive. One of the ways we give is donating to our church, the Salvation Army and various other charities. My wife is a deacon at our church. Also, my family gives by sponsoring a child (a girl from Indonesia since 2006). We just recently have decided to sponsor another child (this time a girl from Mexico) through Compassion international (website is: http://www.compassion.com ). Why do this? A lot of reasons: there are thousands of kids who need the help. It only cost a small amount ($38/month), it is the right way to show true compassion (especially now) and last but not least, it feels really good to do it.
What about you? Is there some way in which you can give this holiday season? If not money then how about time or effort? Can you sew? cook? clean for someone who is less fortunate than you? Sometimes it can be as simple as being kind (please take note of this you Boston drivers!!!). Don't get me wrong I love this time of year and everything it stands for. However this year i am making the holidays stand for something more.
