Historically women outlive men by an average of five years. Did you ever wonder why this is? First of all, women are generally more social than men. Personally, I know of many women who actually have large groups of friends. Women generally make more friends as they get older. For many men it is often the opposite: they make less friends as they age. Socialization, also know as human contact, is directly linked to longevity The next reason that women live longer than men is that the ability to express emotion. Women have much greater ability to do this than most men. The expression of emotion is critical to good health. While the “bottling up” of emotions is detrimental, the expression of emotion not only feels better but is also linked to living a longer life.
The third answer is physical size. Studies show that smaller people outlive larger ones. The average height for a woman is 5 feet four inches and for men is 5 feet 10 inches. Bing smaller is another advantage for longevity.
So the answer for most women is to keep doing what you are doing. The answer for the men, do the things that the ladies are doing like socializing and expressing emotion and chances are that you will live longer.
